LAURA SHULL

Devour is a continuation Laura Shull’s Sweet Series, which began as an exploration of excess and overindulgence represented through saccharine desserts and opulently dressed women gorging on them. Through its fluffy, sensuous brushstrokes, Devour is meant to convey blissful abandon and toe the line between freedom and recklessness, luxury and wastefulness, a pleasant sweetness and nausea inducing sugar overload.

Laura Shull is best known for her lavish paintings featuring self-empowered women in 18th century powdered wigs devouring sweet treats. She works predominately in oil paint while occasionally venturing into mixed media drawings and small sculptural pieces. She is drawn primarily to female figurative subject matter and works to create theatrical one-woman scenes using costume, dramatic lighting, and sumptuous brushstrokes. Inspired by the extravagance of the Rococo period and the undercurrent of eroticism so prevalent in today’s media, Shull seeks to create evocative images that mix classic art and contemporary culture.
